Actually there are three main reasons for all the countries that lead such politics as Taiwan:

  1. Carrying political stability;
  2. Keeping national security;
  3. Saving traditional social values.

If speaking about Taiwan, we can say that the main reasons for censorship there are keeping political stability and saving national values. Whatever the case the censorship violates Internet freedom, which is a common affair for various countries in the 21st century.

Unfortunately, Taiwan citizens and travelers face the problem of blocked resources and websites. Moreover, the fact of hacker attacks and computer fraudulence growth can also be mentioned as additional threats for all the Internet users in Taiwan.

It’s fortunate that today we can use such a defensive service as a VPN or a virtual private network for Taiwan.

As mobile network becomes more popular in the country year by year, the adversaries make attempts to infect portable gadgets as well. Is censorship policy severe in Taiwan?

It is commonly thought that Asian countries are very limited in the access to the Internet. This opinion may be deceptive in some cases.

But why so many people tend to believe that all Asian countries are strictly censored?

The answer is quite simple: China is the biggest country in the world and censorship policy of China is more than strict. A lot of topics are forbidden to cover. Thousands of services and websites are blocked. There are even some VPNs that cannot be used by Chinese residents.

But in contrast to China, Taiwanese people are less restricted in their online activities.Nowadays the population of this tiny country is about 24 mil people

Nowadays the population of this tiny country is about 24 mil people.

At the same time about 86% of people in Taiwan  have access to the Internet and use it regularly.

According to the constitution, people and mass media are free to express their thoughts without any restrictions. There are not any official constraints to the Internet access in the country.

What is more, it was not fixed that the government or any other inspection body would control emails, chats or any other services on the Internet.

In contrast to China

Unlike China, it is not forbidden to discuss any political or social issues. For example, the fact of Taiwan independence is strictly censored in China. Furthermore, one will find it almost impossible to find any information about the period Taiwanese state formation.

As the censorship policy is not strict in the country, people may access almost any website.

On the one hand, it is good, as people are not restricted in the access to the services and may read about all events happening in the world. But on the other hand, it may become negative for Taiwanese residents, as malicious websites are available as well.

In such a way, people need protection of VPN services.

Good afternoon, Cheng. First of all, I would like to mention that it is not important what Internet Service Provider you use. Reliable VPN services bypass all the obstacles of the ISPs. Secondly, you are right in decision to subscribe to the VPN with the servers in Taiwan, as the policy of this small country is several times less strict than in China. All you need is to look through the characteristics of the VPNs that attract you and choose the most suitable one. Have a nice day!

PureVPN is the best VPN for Chrome. Previously I used HMA to hide and change IP, but when I opened Chrome browser my actual IP and my actual location was always identified by the browser. But after I have installed Chrome extensions powered by PureVPN, I feel myself really hidden from third parties. Speed is suitable for streaming. DNS- and IP-leak tests are successfully passed by. The cost is rather low. These things made me opt for Pure VPN to change my IP into Taiwan.

That’s really thorough post, mate! I was especially surprised by the data presented. And in the support of it I’d like to mention that being abroad for study I had to change IP to Taiwan. I studied in Germany and the internet there is dreadful. Almost all streaming and torrenting sites are blocked. Besides, I’ve heard a lot about fins for torrenting. Taiwan IP address changes online habits a lot (despite the real German location). I used Astrill VPN being there because it has servers in Taiwan. It’s very convenient. Its price didn’t embarrass me. I like its extra features and the facility to get even more function, although extra payment is required in this case. Speed was a significant characteristic for me. And Astrill VPN showed good results while being connected to a Taiwan-based VPN server. It was reduced by 5 Mbps. This result is super taking into account the distance between Taiwan and Germany. I also tried USA-based Astrill VPN servers and want to sum up that they do work with streaming services. But of course it is better to connect to Taiwan VPN servers than to American VPN servers, because many torrent sites are blocked while browsing with an American IP. Taiwan is less restricted in this respect.

Taiwanese IP address is really useful in case you want to download a game or a movie, or anything you like. A recent example is “Monster Hunter Frontier Z” game. It’s possible to enjoy it by means of Taiwanese on Hong Kong IPs only. Thus, to take use of it and play without restrictions I created my account through a Taiwan IP address (I changed it through a VPN provider) and everything works perfectly. Actually I use VPN to change my IP into a Taiwanese one rather often. Proxy list I found on Reddit didn’t help me…

Hmmm… The situation you describe is very unusual for Taiwan. I haven’t been living there for about 2 years already, but my memories about Taiwan are still fresh. I can’t mention a website to be blocked in Taiwan, so your question about how to play a game in Taiwan surprised me a lot.

That’s totally true. The situation is still like you have described it. I can’t say that I play online games, but sites blocking isn’t habitual for Taiwan. It’s likely to be an exception to the rule. Restrictions on the net, radio, television, press don’t exist at all.

Although Taiwan is not famous for content blocking, still there are some services and websites that are blacklisted in the country. Online game “Hearts of Iron” is one of such prohibited games. It is forbidden because Taiwan is portrayed as the country under the control of Japan, which is in fact not true. To get access to this game, one is to subscribe for one of the VPNs from the rating of the best VPNs for Taiwan. Remember, that if you want to play online games, the characteristics of speed and bandwidth are significant. So you are to buy a VPN with unlimited speed and bandwidth.

I’ve been living in China for 12 years before moving to Taiwan and I wanna say that the country I moved to is really less restricted. I at least can browse more pages and the search results are more diverse. In the support of some lines that are presented in this post, I’d like to point to: 1) Any site that is disliked by Chinese authorities may be blacklisted and time and there will be no way to access it without a VPN. 2) If a film is disliked by the Chinese authorities it will never be broadcasted on regional TV channels or the sites accessible for Chinese IPs. 3) Sometimes bloggers and social media accounts of definite people are banned, so it’s almost impossible for them to find a job. Strict censorship plays its role for the Chinese residents and thus serves to create the definite picture of the world. But to my mind its better as people are deprived of unnecessary information. Now it Taiwan I can access far more web pages and the information I find out (about the event that took place in the world during the times when I lived in China) sometimes surprises me a lot. I don’ think that I need a VPN because the web experience I acquire now is really awesome. I don’t know other Asian country to be as unrestricted as Taiwan is.

I dare disagree with you totally. To understand how strict/unrestricted the Internet in a particular country, it is necessary to visit many places on all continents. If only you were in the USA at least once, you would understand that that your web surfing in Taiwan isn’t as non-restricted as you think about it. Just Think about Netflix. In fact Netflix website (and thus Netflix service in general) is not available in China, so moving to or visiting Taiwan many people think that Netflix is fully available in Taiwan. Well… yes Netflix is available for Taiwanese, however, people browsing with Taiwanese IP-address have access to a part of original Netflix library. To my mind, it’s some kind of delusion. Besides, here in Taiwan we pay for Netflix subscription and get several times less movies and shows than the Americans. It’s unfair. But, after you connect to a VPN service in Taiwan, your web surfing becomes totally different. The case in the IP. When the Netflix site detects IP outside of the USA, the library for this person is very different.

Don’t indulge in illusions Lin! USA has its own kind of censorship and the network is not as restricted as you think it to be. VPN is the best way to check it. And to my mind, the more locations are allowed, the higher the chance to experience the least restricted internet.

Dear, Liu. VyprVPN is blocked only partially. It means that it is impossible to visit its former official website. But provident VPN developers created a mirror. In such a way, the residents of Chinese CAN access this website using the domain goldenfrog.online. Nevertheless, there are the VPNs that are really blocked and no one can use them being in Chine. In the list of blocked services are free VPN providers. To conclude, if you want to use VyprVPN, you will not face any problems.

That’s impossible to compare VPNs and antivirus soft! They function differently. VPNs are much more efficient and they are multi-functional, whereas antivirus soft is used to block viruses that are dangerous for a device. However, there’s significant difference between them. VPNs prevent malware that can infect a device through the internet only whereas antivirus soft protects the device even in case when you run a CD or a hard drive on your device. Antivirus scans it and blocks in case a malicious file is found. I reckon it’s better to use them both in tandem.

Thank you for an interesting question! VPN services REALLY protect users’ gadgets against various kinds of threats on the Internet. VPNs block access to malicious webpages, in such a way, you will not access the website with the malware. As a result, your device will not be infected. Moreover, VPN services cope with more tasks, antivirus programs do. They (VPNs) block malicious websites, unblock restricted websites and services, make users anonymous on the Internet, encrypt traffic and what not. Living in Taiwan, you are definitely not restricted in the services you use. However, you may visit some websites by chance and they may bring you lots of trouble.
