Use our list of VPNs which are the best for Windows OS.

If you want to:

  • learn about the opportunities of the best VPN;
  • choose the best tariff plan;
  • set up a VPN on your computer or laptop;

You need to take advantage of the information and tips from our article below.

Introduction

To use Virtual Private Network (VPN) a few years ago, one needed to know everything about the system settings, download and configure configuration files, set up an additional firewall. And even then it was difficult to achieve a high level of anonymity and security when using Windows. Nowadays one can install a pre-configured VPN on PC in 1 minute!

But among more than 300 VPN service providers, there are lots of unfair or inexperienced ones.

That’s why we do reviews devoted to choosing the best VPN for different platforms, including Windows. The lists of the best ones include only the providers tested by the experts, with positive reviews and background.

Here are the reasons why we recommend taking advantage of our Top 5 VPNs for Windows:

  1. The services are tested by time.
  2. They have lots of positive reviews.
  3. Their technical characteristics are at the highest level.

1. Top 5 VPNs For Windows

1. ExpressVPN

2. NordVPN

3. CyberGhost

4. IPVanish

5. VyprVPN

With an eye to choose 5 best VPNs, we have conducted technical tests, compared their popularity on the Internet, examined reviews on the thematic forums and on our site.

1.1 ExpressVPN – Handiest VPN for Windows (from $6.67/mo)

ExpressVPN for Windows

An undisputed leader among VPN services is ExpressVPN. It came to the market about 10 years ago and managed to work out a product of the highest possible standard. Unmatched software stability for PC, best-in-class Netflix support, incredible user-friendliness, attentive support team, reputable “No Logging” policy – are only some pluses of this VPN. My colleagues from BestVPNRating and I use ExpressVPN and think it to be the best choice for PC running on Windows and for other devices (have a look at our review of the best VPNs for Android, for example).

ExpressVPN is popular across the globe. Despite a relatively high price, the service takes the 1st place by popularity in many countries (China, the UAE, Philippines, Hong-Kong). This suggests that ExpressVPN is the leader among large-scale VPN services used to bypass blocking on the Internet.

We’ve carried out proper testing of VPN technical capabilities on Windows 7 and Windows 10. Neither problems nor vulnerabilities were identified for ExpressVPN.

It supports torrenting.

You can compare all the features of 5 best VPN services, recommended to use on PC.

The average level of interest based on internet search “expressvpn windows”, according to Google Trends:

internet search “expressvpn windows”

With ExpressVPN you can get a refund if you decline the service within 30 days.

More details on ExpressVPN:

1.2 NordVPN – Most Popular VPN for Windows (from $2.99/mo)

NordVPN for Windows

It is the most popular VPN provider for Windows. NordVPN has over 5000 servers in 64 countries herewith a low price.

We haven’t detected IP leaks peculiar to many services. The software with an attractive interface is ad-free and user-friendly. We’ve tested many different VPN providers, consequently, we recommend you the soft by NordVPN to use on Windows 10, Windows 7 and older versions.

NordVPN is satisfactory for any purposes, including torrenting. And there is a bonus – NordVPN offers extra service of Double VPN. There are a lot of positive user reviews of NordVPN usage. Many of those who made use of the soft for PC, also installed this VPN on smartphones and other gadgets, because NordVPN allows using up to 6 devices per one account.

The level of interest based on internet search “nordvpn windows”, according to Google Trends:

internet search “nordvpn windows”

The service has been in existence since 2008, and so you can trust its experience. We recommend using NordVPN for PC and other platforms.

More details on NordVPN:

1.3 CyberGhost – Perfect for Netflix. Low price (from $2.75/mo)

CyberGhost for Windows

It’s one more excellent evolving VPN service. Back in early 2019, it had about 3000 servers, whereas its number reached 3700 by the mid-March. A very attractive design of apps, including the ones for PC, serves to configure the facilities for your needs. For example, CyberGhost possesses a dedicated VPN server for Netflix streaming. For this reason, you won’t have to switch between the dozens of servers in search of the one which would unblock Netflix.

CyberGhost characteristics for Windows are to a high standard. On some rare locations we have identified lags when watching HD video, but in general, the service works rapidly.

CyberGhost is broad-based and suitable for any purposes. Besides, you can occupy a dedicated IP. Though it’s for an extra cost of $5 per month.

There is information in some CyberGhost reviews on the Internet that unacceptable snooping methods are used on its official website.

However, these methods are used not to monitor people but to get the website optimized for the users, and it resembles Google monitoring. Furthermore, these functions are not related to VPN work. Your traffic doesn’t pass through this site. Consequently, you can feel free to use this handy and modern VPN service.

The level of interest based on internet search “cyberghost windows”, according to Google Trends:

internet search“cyberghost windows”

We recommend using CyberGhost to watch Netflix. Also, you will be provided with a dedicated IP, which is extremely helpful when you need to travel and still have access to the services which restrict access by IP address.

More details on CyberGhost:

1.4 IPVanish – Popular Service for PC in the USA (from $4.12/mo)

IPVanish for Windows

The speed of IPVanish is one of the fastest in this sector, there is a detailed traffic statistics. The shortcomings in the app for Windows haven’t been identified (we’ve carried out tests for Windows 7 and Windows 10), but if you want to use IPVanish for Android, keep in mind that a significant for security function “Kill Switch” is not implemented yet.

Besides, IPVanish is located in the US («14 eyes» alliance). That is why we don’t advise people who appreciate anonymity to use it.

It might be used for many purposes which don’t require anonymity.

The level of interest based on internet search “ipvanish windows”, according to Google Trends, it’s popular in the US but takes the 4th place across the globe:

internet search “ipvanish windows”

We recommend IPVanish to people who want to know how much traffic is transmitted over the VPN.

We don’t recommend it to people who are concerned about a high degree of anonymity. Also, the money-back period when refusing to use the service is shorter as compared with the rivals – 7 days.

More details on IPVanish:

1.5 VyprVPN – Service to Bypass OpenVPN blocking (from $5/mo)

VyprVPN for Windows

VyprVPN for PC has amazed us with an unusual way to go round the blocking of VPN connections. It might be handy for China and Egypt.

A 3-day trial period will help you to look at the functions of this VPN provider. However, if you don’t like the service quality but have already paid for it, you won’t get a refund.

One might use it for torrenting, but there were cases when VyprVPN accounts were blocked in response to complaints from content or soft right holders.

The level of interest based on internet search “vyprvpn windows”, according to Google Trends, is lower as compared with its main rivals:

internet search “vyprvpn windows”

We recommend VyprVPN to those who want to use a VPN free of charge on PC and other gadgets for 3 days and who face troubles with VPN blocking (when dealing with more popular services).

The popularity is notably lower as compared with its rivals.

We don’t recommend it to those who use torrenting sites.

4. When is VPN necessary for Windows?

When we recommend installing VPN on Windows:

  • when you take your laptop abroad (be sure you set up a VPN in advance);
  • if you have a laptop and you connect it to Wi-Fi;
  • if you do shopping online;
  • for unblocking websites;
  • for using Facebook, Skype, Telegram, and other messengers with the provision of calls.
  • for watching Netflix in other regions.

Learn more about dangers for Windows:

Taking into account growing opportunities of the Internet, different internet platforms and services offer more and more options. Voice and video calls, online payments, online business and others, which is developing very fast.

Along with that, both traffic volume and the amount of data transferred through the network (bank credentials, logins and passwords, financial information, personal data and others) are increasing.

Going from your computer to the endpoint, your traffic goes through lots of intermediary devices on the Internet: ranging from Wi-Fi network, router and your ISP’s equipment to state monitoring systems and technical nodes in different countries.

Moreover, some countries may legally or illegally monitor and track your personal data.

Though Windows 10 has become far more secure than the older versions, we can’t be sure that all programs installed on PC are secure and aren’t vulnerable as well. Using the vulnerabilities of software, criminals can get access to your information.

In fact, public Wi-Fi spots are high-risk areas, no matter how secure they could be. Having connected to public Wi-Fi, you connect to the network where all devices see each other, and the transferred traffic is vulnerable to invisible attacks.

What’s the way out? VPN! Virtual Private Network will encrypt your personal data in a reliable way and send it in such way to the VPN server that you can choose on your own.

Thus, nobody can get access to your information while it is between you and that server.

For example: You are in Greece. You get connected to the Internet from the lounge area of the hotel to pay a bill through your browser. You launch the VPN app, choose the server of your country and turn the VPN on. From this moment, an encrypted tunnel is created between your laptop and the VPN server, and there is no chance to intercept your personal data.

The VPN technology is absolutely legal around the world, except some countries. But even in those countries millions of people use VPN. As a rule, the authorities ban VPN networks to control the opposition. If you aren’t one of the opposition members, you aren’t of the authorities’ interest.

We recommend you to always use VPN on Windows. What’s more, all good VPN providers allow at least 3 simultaneous connections per one account that’s why be sure you’ve configured VPN on mobile devices as well.

5. Don’t use free VPNs. Free plans of paid VPNs

When at BestVPNRating we hear about a free VPN for devices working on Windows, we offer a good alternative – free tariffs of paid services.

Why?

Because paid services make money off subscriptions and offer free tariffs for customers to have a look at VPN and attract them, whereas free VPNs make money off ads, which is often implemented in your traffic, adware distribution, and sometimes even off malware distribution. It often takes place and can do much harm, up to the loss of function of Windows OS.

It was reported that free services were selling user personal data to third parties (ranging from your emails and list of visited sites to payment credentials from your traffic). Paid services won’t do like that as it’s negative advertising for them. They will lose their subscribers.

What’s the way out?

Free tariffs offered by some good VPN providers. They allow you to use VPN without problems, but with some restrictions. Some providers restrict internet speeds, others – monthly volume of traffic consumption.

Actually, there is a better alternative. For example, VyprVPN offers an opportunity to use a free trial version without speed or traffic restrictions. We often receive positive reviews from users who tried to set up VPN software on PC, then they obtained a VPN subscription at a discount and have been using a reliable VPN.

Don’t endanger yourself by using free VPNs. Even if you use the most famous ones. There are decent alternatives to them.

6. How VPN influences the Internet speed

It may slow down the Internet at 20% and more. It depends on a tunneling protocol and the speed of a VPN server. As a rule, the fastest protocol is used by default, and VPN services’ speeds are higher than your Internet connection that’s why you won’t notice the loss of speed.

For this reason, in most cases connection speed reduction won’t influence the overall use of the Internet. But sometimes you should pay attention to how fast your VPN is.

When do you need high speeds for using VPN on Windows?

  1. Torrenting
  2. Watching 4K video
  3. Online gaming
  4. Video calls with high resolution image

If you use VPN for one of the examples mentioned above, pay special attention to connection speeds when choosing a provider.

How to choose the fastest VPN for Windows? Use our list of VPNs for PC where you’ll find only the fastest VPN services.

Thus, VPN partially slows down the Internet, but generally, you won’t notice it, especially if you use the fastest VPN services.

Conclusion. Recommendations

Apps for Windows appeared on the market long enough, even earlier than for other platforms. Most VPN apps compatible with Windows work excellently, but nevertheless, not all VPN providers are worth being the best services for Windows.

In order to choose the best VPN providers, you need to consider both the functionality of the services and their work from different perspectives. Follow the steps below to choose the leaders of the industry:

  1. Study users and specialists’ reviews on all platforms.
  2. Study the history of the company, involvement in research projects, which help to increase the opportunities of the service.
  3. Learn everything about the server park of the service: its total number, speeds, reliability, availability for different tasks.
  4. Find out how it’s developing and how popular it is.
  5. Test the work of its customer support specialists.
  6. Study its financial policy.

As you can see, to set up and test a VPN app is not enough for choosing a good VPN. We have conducted a comprehensive study and took into account all necessary factors to choose the leaders. That’s why it doesn’t surprise that the best VPNs for PC are the same as the best VPNs for other platforms.

We hope that our work helped you to choose a VPN provider for you.

Leave us your comments and ask us questions. We’ll be glad to answer them.

Hi! A VPN for Windows is definitely a good decision. Although I work on Mac at work, I still use Windows laptop at home. The VPN I use is Ivacy! My fav geo-locations (I mean IPs) are the UK, USA and Netherland. If you’re interested, I’ll explain why! The UK-based VPN servers make it possible to unblock British news portals, which I like most of all. To my mind, they are most true and unbiased. The USA-based servers make my streaming great. Due to such VPN servers I can open any site on my Windows laptop and the quality of streaming is fantastic! Netflix is accessible! Hooray! The Netherlands-based servers I use to download torrents. Not many people know one fact – the authorities of the Netherlands are quite tolerate towards torrenting. In this regard, VPN servers located in this country are preferable for me if I want to download smth to watch when the Internet connection is impossible. Besides, the speed is fast enough – 75-80 mbps! I discussed VPN speed on numerous forums and was rather surprised… Not all VPN providers allow reaching high speed, which disables streaming, torrenting and even video communication. But Ivacy is the best VPN for Windows to my mind. Oh, I was about to forget to say what OS my device is running on – Windows 10 version. I’ve heard lots about its vulnerabilities and features that serve the government to monitor Windows 10 users. But in actual fact, I haven’t found anything like this. Subscribe for Ivacy VPN for Windows 10 and you won’t lose!

Hello Octavio! If you aim at playing online games, it is necessary to hide your activity on the Internet from the ISP. VPN services for Windows cope with this task easily. They manage to cipher all traffic including websites one visits and even files a user downloads. Thus, it is recommended to use VPNs for Windows that support PPTP and OpenVPN tunneling protocols. They are the fastest ones. Among the pluses of PPTP one would find easy set up, fast work whereas OpenVPN is known for its security, facility to work through firewalls and super fast speed.

I play League on my Windows PC, but there's too much restrictions. I know that many ISPs slow down the speed for those users who play online games. BUt when it happens it becomes barely possible to play because everything becomes too slow. Besides, not all levels are available for me and it's What if I install VPN on Windows? Can it improve the situation? And what type of protocols it is better to c use?

I also used VPN to watch FIFA this year. It’s cheaper and it’s easier. But in the place I live the problems with broadcasting are too regular, so I didn’t want to miss matches of my favorite team and subscribed for a VPN to watch matches on my Windows laptop. It’s convenient. I connect my laptop to TV through HDMI and the quality of the picture I perfect. But FIFA broadcasting is not the only benefits I got after subscribing for a VPN for Windows. Also I got access to the best streaming sites and that’s awesome!!! Data protection doesn’t bother me so I can’t say anything about it.

Thanks for helping me watching FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018. I’m not risky enough for going to Russia, so I preferred to stay in my homeland and watch FIFA 2018 at home in Paris.

Well there are too many vulnerabilities in this operating system, so I reckon it to be dead necessary to use a VPN for Windows. I prefer ExpressVPN for Windows. Don’t think that my comment is paid or is some kind of advertisement. Neither it is a promotion. It’s just the shout of my soul. ExpressVPN is a perfect VPN client for Windows. Its servers are located around the world that enables its subscribers to bypass restriction of any kind. I haven’t mixed its bad speed, coz it’s really perfect! Who knows maybe gossips about slow Windows VPN speed are concerned with gossips only and with the desire of the gvr to prevent people from using VPNs, but I must admit that with ExpressVPN installed on my Windows devices the speed was the same as without it. Netflix is accessible from every corner of the word I travel to. That’s unbelievable!!! Some people prefer using other VPNs for Windows because ExpressVPN allows only 3 simultaneous connections for 1 subscription. But I don’t think it to be a problem because usualy wehave no more than 3 devices (sometimes even less): laptop or PC, tablet and smartphone. So paying for other VPNs people overpay for unnecessary number of devices - 5 or 6. Besides, not everything is so perfect about VPNs for Windows. Some of them are weak in terms of leak. So it’s better try a VPN for free to test if it is vulnerable to IPv6 and IPv4 DNS leaks or one may simply subscribe for ExpressVPN and don’t worry about the things like leaks, data theft and anonymity. Everything is possible with ExpressVPN. I want all people to know this and not to make mistakes subscribing for incredible VPNs.

I disagree with you… It’s more important where a VPN provider for Windows is located than the places the servers are hosted. Of course if we are talking about such notions as security and privacy. T is vital to choose a VPN service that is hosted in a place where the legislation forbids to monitor online users and collect any kind of information about them. Also it is important to choose a proper payment system. The more secure it is – the better for you and your privacy. So I refer paying for my anonymity and data protection with crypto currency. Crypto currency serves to make anonymous payment on the net. But it’s not so easily achievable as it may seem. There are some actions one should undertake to may such crypto payment really anonymous. Minuses are also possible. When a payer isn’t satisfied with the VPN money or crypto coins won’t be back. So there are two sides of the coins and it’s up to you to decide how to protect yourselves.

That's too incautious to say so. In case the VPN is based in a 5-eye country, it's not always means that it spies on you. More important is where its servers are located. Servers placed in restricted countries like China will unlikely help people bypass restrictions. Vice versa, they can make the net even less accessible in terms of sites and services that one may use. And yep if you care about your privacy, the VPN server location also determines the way you browse the net, and the way third pares spy on you.

Hi Michael! You are right – there is inbuilt Windows VPN software. But it differs a lot from a specially worked out VPN clients for Windows. The thing is that inbuilt Windows VPN lacks OpenVPN tunneling protocol, which is reckoned to be securest. The developers haven't found any serious vulnerabilities in this protocol. Thus, it is strongly recommended to use OpenVPN while protecting user data. Unfortunately, neither Windows nor Mac operating systems support OpenVPN. There are only two OSes that support this secure protocol: BSD and Linux. Thus, answering your question, I would like to advise you use VPN clients for Windows that are not built in the system. In the event that man uses a third party VPN software, Windows devices are enabled to transfer user traffic through this tunneling protocol. The conclusion is the following: it is recommended to use a specially worked out VPN client for Windows OS, as such apps are more reliable and allow users to be really private. But in case a person still wants to use built-in Windows VPN, he/she is to be ready that the traffic will be transferred by dint of PPTP or L2TP.

I know that there're both built-in Windows VPNs and special soft that supports this OS. What's the difference between them? Or maybe there's no difference at all, and i can use any VPN for Windows that i'll find attractive. What do you think?

Hi Windows users! I’m looking for the VPN for Windows. But this article didn’t help me coz I’m in search of a free VPN that doesn’t impose any restrictions such as speed, bandwidth, servers and so on. I need to make my browsing less restricted and safe. Sometimes, some viruses block my PC and I have to reinstall the OS. It’s not cheap as you know, as I use license version only! As it is, the characteristics are as follows: my OS – Windows 7, VPN plan – free and unlimited, servers – US-based are required as well as servers in other countries. Thanks in advance!
