Windows 10 ever since it was introducedAs we all know, Windows 10 is up for grabs and Windows has been aggressively promoting it. For the users of previous versions, Windows 10 is available for free download.

However, security issues have been plaguing Windows 10 ever since it was introduced.

The biggest problem lays with the Windows 10 data collection settings. We are also worried about the potential DNS = DNS (Domain Name System) - a system that translates Internet addresses in special terms.

Servers convert web addresses from domain names (letters combination that is clear for human) into the numeric IP (computer-understandable code) making the requested resource accessible.

Keeping these issues in your mind, it’s high time for you to rely on a VPN service. More and more security issues come to the fore every day. Considering that, it is wiser to use a VPN service for your own safety. If you are looking for free VPN for Windows 7, then that’s available too.

Have a look at the rating of 5 best providers below:

  1. Express VPN – available for 3 devices per one subscription! (Current leader!)
  2. Nord VPN – unlimited speed and bandwidth, kill switch for data privacy!
  3. CyberGhost VPN – 1500+ super-speedy servers and double encryption!
  4. Vypr VPN – 200 000+ IPs, NAT Firewall and unlimited speeds!
  5. IPVanish VPN256-bit encryption and servers in 60+ countries to bypass censorship!

Several things determine whether a VPN is good for your Windows Smartphone and PC or not. Like in every other industry, finding a top rated VPN for Windows requires some due diligence on your part.

You are also required to be well informed so as to ensure that you identify the right VPN that complements the Windows 7 features of your device, as well as protects you from all the issues that it suffers from.

What is a VPN?

Before we delve into the inner details of what a VPN for Windows should look like, it is critical that you understand what a VPN is and how exactly it works.

A VPN can be defined as a network that is able to let two parties (the sender and receiver of information) communicate privately over a public network. Such data communicated is encrypted hence making it impossible for third parties to snoop into the conversation. That isw exactly why, manypeople use VPNs for Skype communication.

There are numerous VPNs in the market and this means that there must be some differentiating features. Different VPNs offer varying services to their different customers. It is important to note the main features of a VPN that will suit you when you are using Windows 10 or Windows 7.

There is a VPN for Windows phone which will enable you to stream videos and music without a hitch while and at the same time not able to protect your data connections from hackers and other snooping eyes. Consider some of the features below.

Features to look out for when shopping for a VPN

  1. Compatibility – Windows is a big platform and there are many versions (Windows 1.0 all the way to Windows 10.0) of the same and which can be used on a variety of devices.

There are many Smartphones, tablets, and PCs which run on Windows. The best VPN software for Windows is that which is compatible with all your devices running on Windows OS. Moreover, such a VPN should also be compatible with other OSs such as Linux, Android, and Chrome (there are even dedicated VPNs for Google Chrome browser).

Of course, you can subscribe for a free VPN for Windows phone, but you should remember that due to constantly changing network settings phones and tablets need extra defense if compare them with PCs. Besides, when speaking about compatibility, provided that you have already updated your system you need best Windows 10 apps.

  1. It should be fast – The one thing that can make one easily irritated is a slow VPN. Many of the VPNs for Windows phone are known to boast of enabling customers to access the internet at a faster rate than they otherwise would if they were browsing without it.

This is made possible when these VPN firms use tunneling protocols that are sturdy and reliable. Some of the protocols that will give you super fast VPN connection include PTPP, SSL, L2TP/IPSec, and OpenVPN. However, OpenVPN is more for your internet privacy, especially when using a public Wi-Fi rather than for streaming of videos and music.

  1. Security – There are many super VPN for Windows which are designed to make sure that your data, as well as all your internet connections, are extremely safe. A good VPN for PC or even for your Smartphone will ideally come with a 256-bit encryption. There are those VPNs, however, that employ 128-bit encryption which albeit not preferred is better than using no encryption.

Encryption ensures that no government spying app can access any of your data. It also protects you from cybercriminals and all the phishing and marketing firms which work hard to know your browsing habits. A super VPN for Windows 7 should provide your network with all the necessary protective measures, despite a built-in VPN for Windows browser.

  1. Trial period and money back guarantee – In order to make customers’ experience good and to ensure that the services they are getting are exactly what they want, the best VPN software should be designed to enable customers to test-drive it first.

Today, many of the VPN for Windows offer trial services. Secondly, a majority of these firms offer a money back guarantee which means that you will get back your money if at all you are dissatisfied with the services during a specified period of time. Most firms promise to refund your money without asking any questions. In addition, it should be easy for you to open a VPN client.

  1. It should be global – The major reason why people want to use free VPN services besides protecting their privacy is to ensure that they get to access as much of the internet as possible. This is only possible if that super free VPN has a wealth of high-speed servers spread across as many countries as possible. The more the VPN servers, the better the chance of customers accessing all the geo-restricted websites and channels across the world.

It is dead important for a netizen to subscribe for a VPN that would NOT be blocked by the services like Netflix.

  1. The number of servers in different countries - If servers are located only in the USA, then you can face troubles with downloading movies. It is beneficial when there are several European countries (this guarantees almost 100% of anonymity).

Well, what does it mean? In other words, not only the number of VPN servers determines the availability of online content, but their locations as well. A user will manage to unblock any content on the Internet only in case the Windows VPN servers are placed worldwide.

  1. Connected devices - There are VPN services that allow you to protect multiple devices with the one VPN account. And there are those that allow you to install the VPN client on 1 device.

If you are interested in protecting all the gadgets you possess, you need a VPN that allows running a VPN client on multiple devices. The best VPNs for Windows provide users with such an opportunity.

  1. Logging policy - There are anonymous VPN services that do not log. Others register all their clients’ steps on the Internet. In this regard, one is to be quite farsighted and read all the documents presented on the official VPN website thoroughly. Respectable VPN providers for Windows always point out what data are kept in such documents.

Such trustworthy VPNs for Windows may store data on users' emails and do NOT share them with third parties. In case a VPN provider does not guarantee the confidentiality of stored data, it is better to avoid using such services.

Best VPN client for Windows: what for?

Windows is one of the most popular operating systems that has many versions. Today it is a regular and convenient working environment for many people. At the time of its first release, Windows was far from the current sterling operating system.

The popularity of operating systems is really high. And if in the US operating system OS X, installed on computers and laptops Apple, got its proper distribution (its share is about 17.8%), then in the Russian market, Windows is the absolute leader, not planning to concede to its nearest rivals. Consider the diagram which shows Windows usage statistics in August 2017.

Well, it should be said that Windows VPN service is the best for those, who want to keep complete confidentiality and be protected against cyber attacks. It is a powerful decoding system, which hides all the data about your Internet activity. Thus, even government or your Internet provider cannot track what websites you visit.

Users can easily get access to the censored content by means of a VPN for Windows. Besides, it is possible to watch movies as soon as they are released in their original country.

What is DNS and how does it affect you?

If you are wondering as to what DNS is and why you need to fear it, then read on.

The DNS is a Domain Name System and it is used to translate your domain name into numerical IP addresses. In the simplest of definitions, it can be said to be an equivalent of a phonebook in a phone.

All domain names are kept in form of IP addresses. This is necessary because while people will often remember domain names such as bestvpnrating.com, computers remember such addresses in form of IP addresses (numbers). When it comes to using free VPN, it is vital to appreciate how a DNS works.

The best VPN software 2018 should hide your IP address from any third party such as your ISP or government spying agency. The ISP providers use their DNS servers to make this conversion.

The latest version of the Windows, the Windows 10 OS has a new feature that does not direct the DNS requests through just a secure VPN tunnel, but it will also direct it through the local network interface and the ISP provider. Windows wants to improve its web performance and this is the reason why it sends the DNS requests in conjunction with the available resources to offer faster service.

This is a serious problem for everyone who likes to stay anonymous online and does not want others to know what they are doing online. But, with the DNS leak, your ISP can easily monitor and keep track of all your online activities and even record it.

One way to get rid of this problem is to make use of a reliable and reputable VPN service. But, choosing just a reliable VPN service will not be enough.

The Windows 10 is a very strong OS that will ignore the VPN protection and send the request to the DNS server right from your web browser. If this happens, then your ISP can know which site you are visiting and what your online activities are. It will also become a very easy way for hackers and Internet fraudsters to carry out DNS spoofing.

The leak of vital information to ISPs and Internet snoopers even with a protected VPN in place is known as VPN DNS leak. If there is a DNS leak, your anonymity is thrown out of the window and anyone can track your online activities.

Detecting a DNS leak

The most common way which you can use to detect a DNS leak is through dnsleaktest.com. When you open this site, you will be able to see a list of IP addresses. Of course, you should be aware of your IP address so that you can check whether yours appears on the test page. You should also pay close attention to see whether the address of your ISP appears. If your IP address or that of your ISP appears, then it is safe to assume that you have a DNS leak.

Testing for a DNS leak

If you are looking to test if you are suffering from the DNS leak, then you need to visit the dnsleaktest.com website. You will be greeted by the leak test website with a welcome message that will show your IP address and the region or country from where your IP address is located. A standard DNS leak test will be carried out six queries and this will help in pinpointing any DNS leak. The Extended DNS leak test will be carrying out a total of 36 queries with six rounds of six queries.

This test will help in revealing all the possible DNS leaks. If the result of the test shows your real location and the IP address that is provided to you by your ISP provider, then you can be assured of a DNS leak.

Preventing the DNS leak

A DNS leak is to use a VPN service that offers a built-in DNS leak protection feature. The main problem is that there are just a few VPN providers that will be offering VPN with DNS leak protection. It would be a very good option to choose VPNs that offers both DNS leak protection and an Internet kill switch feature. This will ensure that you are 100% anonymous whenever you go online. If by any chance, your VPN connectivity is lost, the Internet kill switch feature will come into action and cut off your Internet connection instantly. It also has the feature to reconnect automatically once the VPN app has started.

Get a static IP

One of the options to try out is to change the DNS servers and this way your Internet service provider will opt to be able to track you properly. You can also make use of a public DNS server to direct your request so that you are not tracked that easily by your ISP. With a static IP, Windows will direct your DNS requests through your preferred DNS servers and not through a random IP address that they assign.

This makes it impossible for leakages as well as making it impossible for hackers, ISPs, and government spies to know what you are up to online. In order to change a DNS server change, you will need some deeper understanding of how it works. This will help you avoid messing up your internet connections.

Choose a pro version VPN

If you are looking to protect your online activity for any VPN connection failure and from being pried by your ISP, then you need to opt for a VPN provider with a genuine Pro version. This is the package that would have features like static private IP, 5 to 6 simultaneous connections, unlimited bandwidth, speed, and server switching, DNS leak fixes like Stop DNS leak, etc.

Select a VPN for Windows 10: key factors

Windows 10 is being particularly enhanced in terms of system safety and protection.

Nevertheless, there are certain potential vulnerabilities which require additional defense. One can enforce security of Windows 10 by applying one of 5 best VPNs for Windows.

Want to know how to choose a VPN for Windows?

What moments should you pay attention to?

Bestvpnrating team has investigated this issue!

  • In case you are a beginner in using a VPN service. You should find a VPN provider that offers a free trial period or money-back guarantee option. The latter feature implies refund within a few days if you are completely unpleased with the VPN product. We recommend you to find out on which terms you can return the money before you subscribe for one of the VPNs for Windows 10.
  • Pay special attention to tariffs as high prices sometimes do not pay off. Here’s the kicker: it might happen that features offered for serious money are not always as efficient as those offered for lower prices.
  • If you worry about your internet privacy, you should apply a VPN service. But you also have to look for the one that keeps the no-logging policy. For instance, certain free VPNs are believed to share users’ personal data with certain outside agencies. Choosing a VPN for Windows 10, make a point of the privacy policy of the VPN provider: how clear and comprehensible it is. Check all the ambiguous points in their policy. Consult with their experts on the topic.
  • In case you want to access top torrent sites and P2P content without danger, you have to pay strong attention to the codifying tools. When you have a VPN connection, both the authorities and ISPs won’t be able to see what data you download. At present OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec protocols are believed to be the strongest ones.

All in all, it is not easy enough to come down with the really best VPN for Windows 10. It will probably take plenty of precious time. For this reason, we have prepared the list of 5 really top-ranked VPNs for Windows of the current year. We have taken into account all factor important for selecting a VPN for this particular purpose. If you haven’t read about 5 best VPNs for Windows, you still have an opportunity to perform it.

Best free VPNs for Windows 10

Having decided to make your network protected from multiple web threats, you need to make sure an output you are going to run is worthy. And a VPN for Opera or Firefox browsers is not enough. A VPN is required.

Although many customers suppose a free service is as good as a paid one you need to learn a few facts about it before making a subscription.

Firstly, a free service doesn’t offer a customer support or the service is not well-timed. Therefore, having been bent on running a free service, you need to be technologically advanced.

Besides, running a free service is not a good idea on the part of the fact that it lacks security and reliability. Thus many VPN companies that offer their service for free make money at selling some data or metadata they store on its customers. As long as you are interested in your data and traffic protection, you need to look for some more reliable ways of protection.

Probably, on the top of everything else, there is a lack of workable defensive measures run by the companies. Most of the free services offer a limited number of encryption protocols for you to choose from. Thus PPTP is one of the most popular among the providers. However, it has been already stated by numerous security experts that the protocol is lack of security and more up-to-date versions can be used by average customers for their online protection, such as L2TP/IPv4, OpenVPN. Therefore, with the usage of such VPN, you are more likely to be compromised online.

In addition, it should be mentioned that most of the best paid companies offer trial versions of their apps or/and money-back guarantees, which make them highly credible, as soon as in case you are dissatisfied with the service, you can get your money back or test the app before subscribing for it. Or one can subscrie for a cheap VPN provider.

Windows 10 security vulnerabilities for your guidance

# Microsoft IE vulnerability

Although the Edge browser seems to be a present-day version of IE, it is as vulnerable for malicious infections as the ‘ancestor’. Remote-code execution vulnerabilities, as well as security exploits, make adversaries able to get control over the system and get access to any needed confidential data.

# Wi-Fi credentials

All your Outlook, Facebook and Skype contacts will get your WiFi credentials as it is set by default in Windows 10. Thus, any of the contacts can hop onto your network without authorization. If not being fixed the feature can lead to more dangerous results or even compromise the network.

# custom-crafted .NET apps

Escalation of privilege exploits can occur with the help of custom-crafted .NET apps. Therefore, the sooner a customer will learn about the fact the better.

According to the data presented by ‘Market Share Research’ at the beginning of 2017, the number of Windows 10 users reaches 25%.

On the one hand, the figures are impressive as almost the quarter uses this OS, but on the other hand, it is not enough for a new advanced operating system.

So what is the reason of such effect?

The thing is in a vulnerability of Windows 10 OS to hacking attacks. Let us start from the very beginning. Windows 10 creators made their best to improve the system and make it user-friendly and easy. Thus, Windows Subsystem for Linux feature was added to the OS.

This feature allows running Linux on Windows 10 OS without any extra modifications. The advantages of this feature are so significant that creators didn’t take into consideration the weak points of it. Thus, Windows 10 became attackable by malware.

Bashware is the most formidable threat for Windows 10 as it is not identified by ordinary security tools such as antivirus systems and other security products. In such a way, if one uses a Windows 10 on a device, built-in WSL feature makes it possible to attack the device from the direction of Bashware. Thus, it is strongly recommended to take into account that appropriate measures should be undertaken to be protected. It was already mentioned that Bashware bypasses the security tools on devices and the only way to stop it is to use a VPN.

VPN is the only security tool that blocks any kind of malware and makes gadgets protected against adversaries. Thus, it is necessary to show preference to the Virtual Private Networks with the following characteristics:

  • a big number of servers and IPs;
  • free log policy;
  • price (a good VPN can’t be free);
  • reliable methods of cyphering.

The list of the vulnerabilities can be continued, however as soon as all previous problems are solved new ones appear. That’s exactly why you need to supply your network with a reliable defense like a VPN service. The output will make your network defended from multiple web threats and adversaries while making your internet free and unrestricted.

Best VPN for Windows 10: How to set up checklist

There two possible ways to set up a VPN app for Windows 10: manual and automatic. We think that you won’t have any difficulties with the first one as it is easy as 1, 2, 3. Three steps are necessary for it: subscribe, download, and set up

We’ll speak in details about manual setup which might be more complicated for average computer users.

After you subscribe for the VPN plan, you have to get some specific information from your VPN provider. You will need the address of the VPN server, data encrypting protocol, the key-word, and username. Then in order to perform secure VPN linking for Windows 10, you have to type in all the required material in a manual way.

Note: Don't forget to make use of VPN coupons to get a discount!

People are increasingly becoming aware of the existing and emerging risks as far as internet browsing goes. While it is becoming widely known that Windows has a DNS leak problem, it is also prudent to appreciate that even other operating systems are also vulnerable to these risks. Therefore, for any platform that you might be using, it is important that you follow these security measures. Thus, the importance of VPN services is vivid.

The Windows 10 version has been expertly designed to optimize on the fastest and the shortest route to the tunneling protocols. This means that despite you having a VPN, your data can still be transferred over an open network if the free VPN route is not as fast or if it is longer than the rest. When it comes to looking for a free VPN for Windows phone, you should look for a VPN that will be able to deal with all the Windows 10 tunneling problems.

Feel free to leave your comment in the form below! We’ll be glad to assist you in choosing the best VPN for Windows!

Hi! A VPN for Windows is definitely a good decision. Although I work on Mac at work, I still use Windows laptop at home. The VPN I use is Ivacy! My fav geo-locations (I mean IPs) are the UK, USA and Netherland. If you’re interested, I’ll explain why! The UK-based VPN servers make it possible to unblock British news portals, which I like most of all. To my mind, they are most true and unbiased. The USA-based servers make my streaming great. Due to such VPN servers I can open any site on my Windows laptop and the quality of streaming is fantastic! Netflix is accessible! Hooray! The Netherlands-based servers I use to download torrents. Not many people know one fact – the authorities of the Netherlands are quite tolerate towards torrenting. In this regard, VPN servers located in this country are preferable for me if I want to download smth to watch when the Internet connection is impossible. Besides, the speed is fast enough – 75-80 mbps! I discussed VPN speed on numerous forums and was rather surprised… Not all VPN providers allow reaching high speed, which disables streaming, torrenting and even video communication. But Ivacy is the best VPN for Windows to my mind. Oh, I was about to forget to say what OS my device is running on – Windows 10 version. I’ve heard lots about its vulnerabilities and features that serve the government to monitor Windows 10 users. But in actual fact, I haven’t found anything like this. Subscribe for Ivacy VPN for Windows 10 and you won’t lose!

I play League on my Windows PC, but there's too much restrictions. I know that many ISPs slow down the speed for those users who play online games. BUt when it happens it becomes barely possible to play because everything becomes too slow. Besides, not all levels are available for me and it's What if I install VPN on Windows? Can it improve the situation? And what type of protocols it is better to c use?

July 10, 2018 0

I set up PPTP connection on my Windows PC and play games without restrictions. Speed is also fine! Thanks a lot!!!

Hello Octavio! If you aim at playing online games, it is necessary to hide your activity on the Internet from the ISP. VPN services for Windows cope with this task easily. They manage to cipher all traffic including websites one visits and even files a user downloads. Thus, it is recommended to use VPNs for Windows that support PPTP and OpenVPN tunneling protocols. They are the fastest ones. Among the pluses of PPTP one would find easy set up, fast work whereas OpenVPN is known for its security, facility to work through firewalls and super fast speed.

Thanks for helping me watching FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018. I’m not risky enough for going to Russia, so I preferred to stay in my homeland and watch FIFA 2018 at home in Paris.

June 29, 2018 0

I also used VPN to watch FIFA this year. It’s cheaper and it’s easier. But in the place I live the problems with broadcasting are too regular, so I didn’t want to miss matches of my favorite team and subscribed for a VPN to watch matches on my Windows laptop. It’s convenient. I connect my laptop to TV through HDMI and the quality of the picture I perfect. But FIFA broadcasting is not the only benefits I got after subscribing for a VPN for Windows. Also I got access to the best streaming sites and that’s awesome!!! Data protection doesn’t bother me so I can’t say anything about it.

Well there are too many vulnerabilities in this operating system, so I reckon it to be dead necessary to use a VPN for Windows. I prefer ExpressVPN for Windows. Don’t think that my comment is paid or is some kind of advertisement. Neither it is a promotion. It’s just the shout of my soul. ExpressVPN is a perfect VPN client for Windows. Its servers are located around the world that enables its subscribers to bypass restriction of any kind. I haven’t mixed its bad speed, coz it’s really perfect! Who knows maybe gossips about slow Windows VPN speed are concerned with gossips only and with the desire of the gvr to prevent people from using VPNs, but I must admit that with ExpressVPN installed on my Windows devices the speed was the same as without it. Netflix is accessible from every corner of the word I travel to. That’s unbelievable!!! Some people prefer using other VPNs for Windows because ExpressVPN allows only 3 simultaneous connections for 1 subscription. But I don’t think it to be a problem because usualy wehave no more than 3 devices (sometimes even less): laptop or PC, tablet and smartphone. So paying for other VPNs people overpay for unnecessary number of devices - 5 or 6. Besides, not everything is so perfect about VPNs for Windows. Some of them are weak in terms of leak. So it’s better try a VPN for free to test if it is vulnerable to IPv6 and IPv4 DNS leaks or one may simply subscribe for ExpressVPN and don’t worry about the things like leaks, data theft and anonymity. Everything is possible with ExpressVPN. I want all people to know this and not to make mistakes subscribing for incredible VPNs.

Hey there! Looking for a VPN for my Windows PC. It'll be my first experience with the instrument of such kind. That's why I want to find some info before subscribing to one of them. I know that there're both built-in Windows VPNs and special soft that supports this OS. What's the difference between them? Or maybe there's no difference at all, and i can use any VPN for Windows that i'll find attractive. What do you think?

That's too incautious to say so. In case the VPN is based in a 5-eye country, it's not always means that it spies on you. More important is where its servers are located. Servers placed in restricted countries like China will unlikely help people bypass restrictions. Vice versa, they can make the net even less accessible in terms of sites and services that one may use. And yep if you care about your privacy, the VPN server location also determines the way you browse the net, and the way third pares spy on you.

I disagree with you… It’s more important where a VPN provider for Windows is located than the places the servers are hosted. Of course if we are talking about such notions as security and privacy. T is vital to choose a VPN service that is hosted in a place where the legislation forbids to monitor online users and collect any kind of information about them. Also it is important to choose a proper payment system. The more secure it is – the better for you and your privacy. So I refer paying for my anonymity and data protection with crypto currency. Crypto currency serves to make anonymous payment on the net. But it’s not so easily achievable as it may seem. There are some actions one should undertake to may such crypto payment really anonymous. Minuses are also possible. When a payer isn’t satisfied with the VPN money or crypto coins won’t be back. So there are two sides of the coins and it’s up to you to decide how to protect yourselves.

Hi Michael! You are right – there is inbuilt Windows VPN software. But it differs a lot from a specially worked out VPN clients for Windows. The thing is that inbuilt Windows VPN lacks OpenVPN tunneling protocol, which is reckoned to be securest. The developers haven't found any serious vulnerabilities in this protocol. Thus, it is strongly recommended to use OpenVPN while protecting user data. Unfortunately, neither Windows nor Mac operating systems support OpenVPN. There are only two OSes that support this secure protocol: BSD and Linux. Thus, answering your question, I would like to advise you use VPN clients for Windows that are not built in the system. In the event that man uses a third party VPN software, Windows devices are enabled to transfer user traffic through this tunneling protocol. The conclusion is the following: it is recommended to use a specially worked out VPN client for Windows OS, as such apps are more reliable and allow users to be really private. But in case a person still wants to use built-in Windows VPN, he/she is to be ready that the traffic will be transferred by dint of PPTP or L2TP.

Hi Windows users! I’m looking for the VPN for Windows. But this article didn’t help me coz I’m in search of a free VPN that doesn’t impose any restrictions such as speed, bandwidth, servers and so on. I need to make my browsing less restricted and safe. Sometimes, some viruses block my PC and I have to reinstall the OS. It’s not cheap as you know, as I use license version only! As it is, the characteristics are as follows: my OS – Windows 7, VPN plan – free and unlimited, servers – US-based are required as well as servers in other countries. Thanks in advance!

Hmmmm… My experience with Ivacy is utterly different! The speed was too slow…
