vpn services for germanyGermany is a world leader in many fronts. It is a role-model for many countries, especially those striving to reach economic maturity.

As far the internet is concerned, Germany is regarded as a free country.

It is presumably a free country where internet accessibility is higher than even a majority of EU countries.

However, to feel safe and secure online, one shouldn’t forget to use a VPN in Germany. Here is the list of the best providers in 2018:

  1. ExpressVPN: Secure VPN offering a huge amount of servers all around the world.
  2. NordVPN: Fast software for Germany with unlimited bandwidth and in-build Kill Switch.
  3. CyberGhost: Reliable VPN offering 256-bit encryption and 3000 servers worldwide.
  4. VyprVPN: Safe VPN with live chat with support and reliable encryption.
  5. IPVanish: Great provider for Germany offering zero traffic logs and P2P connection.

It is proven by the Eurostat research, which showed that 79% of German residents have private access to the World Wide Web. Moreover, the percentage of Internet users in Germany reaches 87%.

These figures are really impressive as compared with other European countries: Italy (65%), Poland (68%) or Romania (55%). However, there are sites that are censored and even banned.

In this regard, the following issues will be covered today:

Censorship in Germany

Like any country in the world Germany has its own unique history, but some moments put Germans to the blush.

In that way, the existence of the holocaust is challenged. Thus, it is impossible to find any material on the Internet about this phenomenon by means of search engine “Google”.

There are some more historical facts and political events that are not covered for German residents. As a result, the Germans can hardly study the real worldview.

7 years ago German authorities started working on a law dedicated to the Internet censorship. In this connection, web sites, which contained information on Nazi, race discrimination, xenophobia, were subjected to censorship.

Being restricted by censorship on the cyber space it is important to choose a reliable VPN, which will allow getting access to any material around the world.

Reasons to use a VPN for Germany

  •  Privacy given by a reliable VPN can’t help impressing. Local ISP is not able to monitor user’s Internet activity anymore, as a VPN subscriber masks the IP.
  •  Geo-spoofing is the best way-out to overcome geographical restrictions of any kind (banned for Germany web sites will be unblocked with a reliable VPN.
  •  Censorship will not be a problem and a resident of any city or village in Germany will now the true news.

If you are looking for the best VPN in Germany check out the list below:

Is torrenting in Germany legal?

Bittorent is simply a technology developed for sharing files over the network. There is nothing wrong about it.

However, it is not legal to download copyrighted torrents through this protocol in Germany.

All in all, in case you deal with legal files, you won’t have undesired problems with German authorities or copyright holders. Still, if you intend to download, for example, theatrical movie releases, do not be surprised to get a warning letter.

Why?

It is quite simple that everything that needs paying money can’t be safe and free on torrent websites. Having noticed that one of the latest newly released films are available on the Internet free of charge, one should think of torrenting it in a skeptical way.

In Germany it is also pretty prominent as those who download illegal torrents can be punished in accordance with the law: fines or even arrests.

Those users who download torrents via file-sharing clients, such as BitTorrent or uTorrent turn to be vulnerable enough. It is a not rare case when Germans receive warning letters saying about copyright infringement.

Such warnings or ‘’Abmahnung’’ notices, as they are called in the German language, need special discussion. More and more torrent users have received such notices sent by German law firms.

According to the letters, the targeted torrent users have violated the copyrights of the holders and are to pay a fine. The payment demand is usually up to hundreds of Euros.

There are certain troubles with ‘’Abmahnung’’ letters:

  • Not all the law agencies are even provided with the right to send such kinds of notices as they haven’t got the permission from actual holders of copyrights.
  • Among those who receive such notices there are people who did not torrent the content.

Unfortunately, in order not to be further followed, the recipients choose to pay. As for German legislation, it seems that it is tolerant towards them.

What can one face without a VPN for Germany?

The reasons to subscribe for a VPN in Germany are diverse. However, there are the netizens who still tempt fate and ignore VPN services.

You may be one of them, but it is necessary to know beforehand what obstacles it is possible to face while surfing with German IP address.

Here are 5 facts that will surprise you:YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft started using new upload filters that block content containing extremist or terrorist information;

  • until 2016 YouTube videos that contained copyright protected music were blocked for Germany;
  • YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft started using new upload filters that block content containing extremist or terrorist information;in May 2017 over 47% of Google requests were deleted for the German  residents;
  • in May 2017 over 47% of Google requests were deleted for the German  residents;
  • despite Germany legislation guarantees freedom of expression, a satirist from Germany – Jan Boehmermann was charged for a poem dedicated to the Turkish president;
  • according to the new BND law introduced in October 2010, it is permitted to monitor internet traffic of civil citizens.

In such a way, it is evident that the Internet is not as free as it seems to be. Constant monitoring and vanishing of information influences the lives of the German significantly.

To become more protected and less restricted on the Internet, it is possible to use a VPN service in Germany.

How to choose a reliable VPN for Germany?

Having studied the best VPNs for Germany one will ask oneself a question: How to choose it? To answer this question it is necessary to pay attention to the characteristics of VPNs.

  •  Number of servers.

It is one of the most important characteristics to pay attention to. The more servers one uses, the more unique a footprint on the Internet becomes. And it will be an uphill struggle to identify a user, his/her location and what not.

  •  Available countries.

The principle ‘the more the better’ works here as well, but except for a unique Internet footprint one possesses, a user gets access to various services around the world. Thus, a German resident can visit such web sites like couchtuner.ag without any limits.

  •  Keeping logs.

If one wants to stay safe and anonymous on the Internet it is vital to choose a VPN, which doesn’t keep logs (information on user’s IP, requested web sites, HTTP codes, etc.). These data can be sold to third parties and a user can be attacked by numerous advertisers.

  •  Price.

Usually VPNs cost from $1 up to $20 for a month subscription, but free versions are also available. It is up to you to decide what variant to choose for a reliable Internet surfing in Germany, but you are to know that free VPNs  sometimes keep logs, which doesn’t give you a chance to keep your anonymity.

  •  Encryption.

Among best facilities of a reliable VPN is the ability to encode all transferring data (logins, passwords, incoming and outgoing messages, downloaded and uploaded files and what not). There are various ciphers for encoding data, AES is considered to be the most reliable one for a VPN in Germany.

  • Multi logins.

The best VPN services for Germany allow protection from 1 up to 6 devices by means of 1 subscription. Thus, while choosing a VPN for Germany, a user is to think beforehand how many devices should be protected.

  • Operating system of a gadget.

The operating system of a device must not be ignored. Otherwise, it is possible to face the situation when the installed VPN app doesn’t work. The best VPNs for Germany are compatible with the most popular OSes, but spend a couple of minutes on reading such information and be protected!

Having studied all the VPN characteristics presented in this article, it will be easy for a user to find his/her ideal VPN provider to be protected against third parties’ invasion, hacking attacks, content restrictions and what not.

Too many bigass companies here! One of them deprived me a chance to download torrents. They spammed me with intimidate texts, made my speed slow over the top and so on down the list. They say such companies are against VPNs. I'm not sure but to my mind they made people subscribe for VPNs, as without them the internet is dreadful. Why so? I don't understand the world…. Everything should be done for use – human beings, but not against us…

Hey guys! I'm Sofi from Germany, Hanover. I get bachelor's degree at University of Heidelberg. Many things happening in the world turned to be utterly different after I choose this sphere to investigate. And now I work on my thesis dedicated to World War 2. That period was legendary not only for Germany but for the mankind in general. It happened so that I had to read a lot about the war. Also I was lucky to watch numerous films about WW2 and post war period shoot abroad. But there're so many points of view and in the majority of films I managed to watch Germans look like ruthless despots who wanted to destroy everything and the ideas of Nazi army seemed to me were reproduced in a false manner. Well, I scrolled tens of sites and forums and found out that many people agree in opinion that the 6 hours version of 'Das Boot' on Netflix streaming service is the best representation of the real feeling of Germans about the war. But! I faced some stupid restrictions while making attempts to watch this piece of art (I call it like this not mistakenly, after I managed to watch it, I couldn't sleep for the whole night because of the feelings I experienced)! Everyone knows about this streaming portal and the quality of content it contains. Also I heard that it is available not in ever country. But I knew for sure that it works in Germany, as some friends of mine use Netflix in Germany. So I took out a subscription to Netflix and started searching for the targeted movie. No 'Das Boot' there I found! I again opened the forum where one guy advised me watch it on Netflix and sked for help. And you know they told me that it's highly likely I can't find this film on Netflix because I browse with Germany IP. It's difficult to express my emotions, but I told them I'm from Germany. Lots of discussions, explanations, pieces of advice and finally they helped me find wayout. And finally they told me that VPN can solve this problem. Of course I had to spend a couple more days to find an ideal one, but it's worth doing it. That's why I'm here and write this comment for people. Maybe someone also would face such situation. If so, he will know what to do. Thanks for reading my comment in case it is published (I hope it is). Best wishes everyone!

Your problem reminds me mine. But a bit different. I was looking for a VPN to unblock American content in Germany. I won't say that the process was fast. I tried several free VPN apps in Germany and one paid before finding my favorite. I subscribed for NordVPN to use my Samsung Smart TV all out. To my mind, Nord is the only VPN which network grows in high gear. This year NordVPN increased the number twice or even more. That's awesome coz American streaming services tend to use the programs that detect people accessing their sites by means of IP-changing tools like VPNs. So many IP addresses that belong to VPNs become blocked by streaming services sooner or later. When the provider creates more and more IPs it becomes harder to ban them. So Nord copes with this task better than many VPNs.

hi there! i’m one of vpn subscribers. using vpn in germany i became really independent from the ip address. besides, by trial and error i found the best vpn service for torrenting even in such a strict towards this issue country like germany. this place is too strict to torrent sites, so it blocks them and even punishes people who access them. it runs into absurdity when people realize that is doesn’t matter if a torrent file was downloaded or not. sometimes people were punished because they opened a torrenting site!!! could you imagine?! and i must add that it’s not a gossip because my cousin got notifying letters several times. that’s why I conducted my own research and found the german vpn that manages to bypass all possible restrictions and hides my online. the vpn i use is called cyberghost. the first thing that attracted me was its price – rather low when choosing a 3-year package. the next thing that helped me opted for cyber vpn was its server park – very diverse for such a cheap vpn. and what is more attractive personally for me is that there’s a great diversity of both uk and us servers. in fact, they are the best in terms of streaming. apart from it, the provider offers servers in countries, which are friendly towards torrenting. for example, switzerland. the third thing that made me subscribe for cyberghost was its clear logging policy. as it is written in documents on the site, the vpn provider doesn’t keep logs. in other words, metadata are not stored or shared. and the last point that i want to highlight is its live chat assistance. for me it is very important to communicate with a real human being but not a machine. neither i like reading articles when i need help. specialists of cyberghost vpn react immediately and provide with detailed info (step by step instructions, screenshots and what not. the general impression is more than positive, as cyberghost changed my restricted web browsing into unrestricted and really convenient.

Despite numerous debates on the topic of legality of VPN services in Germany, using VPN in Germany people do NOT break the law. In this regard, there is no chance to undergo fines or other types of penalties. Moreover, becoming a subscriber of a good VPN service for Germany, a person is given a unique opportunity to hide IP address and thus become untraceable for the ISP and other third parties. While choosing the best VPN or VPNs for Germany it is necessary to study “Privacy policy” and “Terms of service” documents to be sure that the chosen provider does NOT keep logs on subscribers’ activity.

This article is quite informative, but I would add something. I’m a native German. And I’ve been living in Germany since the day I was born (for 36 years already). Of course, I was abroad in the United States, in England, Belgium and some other countries. And I would mention that the Internet is different in different countries. The search results are different as well, but I know about SEO and must say that it is not connected with it. The thing is that Germany is in the list of 14-eye countries. For those who don’t know what it is I’ll explain in a couple of words. 14-eye alliance is the union of 14 countries that signed one document (it’s connected with data retention law). According to this document, the government of Germany has the legal right to store metadata on internet users for 10 weeks. It means that people, who open web pages by means of German IPs, are constantly monitored. Internet providers store data on our search histories, messages, visited pages, time we spent on definite pages and many other ‘interesting’ for some parties information.

Yohan, your explanation is really understandable, but you’ve made a mistake. It’s not a ‘14-eye alliance’ but a ‘14-eyes alliance’. And to my mind, you’ve missed one significant fact. According to the agreement, the members of the ‘14-eyes alliance’ don’t spy on each other, whereas the real state of affairs is not so positive. They do spy on members of the alliance and other countries as well, but do it secretly. So a VPN is necessary for many places of the world and Germany as well. It not only helps to change IP but to hide your real one and traffic. VPN in Germany is a very useful tool if you are concerned about your privacy.
