How to skype if it is blocked in your country? How to use Skype for free without restrictions?

We’ll definitely answer those and other FAQ questions this time. Today you’ll read about:

The most striking Skype facts;

Skype restrictions around the globe.

And that’s not all….

Really effective checklist of tips on how to skype from everywhere without limitations! Have we sparked the interest of you in this? Let’ start from afresh!

Main highlights of the article:

Before Skype Creation and Usage

Following the advent of the Internet, VoIP was bound to happen at some point. The root of VoIP goes as far back as 1928 when Homer Dudley invented the Vocoder — the first electronic voice synthesizer. In 1973, Bob McAuley and Charlie Radar developed the first voice packet, the underlying principle of transmitting voice over the Internet, over the promising ARPANET (now decommissioned). Danny Cohen developed the NVP — Network Voice Protocol — in the same year (1973) to carry real-time voice over ARPANET.

By the turn of the last decade of the 20th century, the first Voice over IP application was released as a public domain. John Walker wrote the application called “Speak Freely,” while Brian Wiles developed it further.

However, the most auspicious breakthrough in VoIP occurred in 1995, when VocalTec released the first commercial Internet phone software. The VoIP industry blossomed, and by 2003, the number of VoIP calls was as much as 25% of all voice calls.

Skype Revolutionizes the VoIP Industry or Why We Prefer Skype

Despite the success of VoIP, there were still opportunities for further enhancements. Skype seized these opportunities when it launched a beta program in 2003. Skype was a comet that hit the VoIP industry with three core merits that deserve attention.

  • Computer voice calls are completely free of charge.
  • Completely free instant messaging service that offers the users versatility in communication.
  • Ability to call landlines and cell phones, at a reduced cost that is much lower than the average VoIP rate from other VoIP providers.

Moreover, when Skype-integrated video chats into its software in 2005, it took the deserved lead in the industry. Over the years, Skype has maintained this leading position thanks to the rapid evolution and consistent user-centric enhancements.

Statistics confirms our supposition as in 2014 Skype has commanded a 40% share of the International call market against 2.9% in 2005.

Some Interesting Facts about Skype:

  • free software;
  • conference calls up to 25 users;
  • transmitting an image from a web camera and a monitor screen;
  • program release, developed by Estonian ‘heads’, in 2003;
  • Windows bought out Skype in 2011 for $8, 5 milliards;
  • the main office is in Luxembourg;
  • paid SkypeOut permits making calls to the stationary and mobile phones + calls to toll-free numbers are free (the US +1800);
  • the Californians Samuel Kim and Helen O. have married each other via Skype. The fact is that the fiancé checked into a hospital at appointed day;
  • a sequential clamping of three and more buttons on the keyboard, while typing a message, will make so that the caller won’t see a ‘writing pencil’ but ‘cat’s paws’;
  • if you push the buttons randomly you can see hands breaking a pencil;
  • besides the built-in smiles, there are some secret ones: (smoking), (drunk), (pool party), (headbang), (fubar), (tmi), (flag:+two letters of a country), etc.

So, as it is known Skype video calls are widely-spread among netizens. They have become one of the most preferred ways of communication via the Internet. About 7 years ago, it was reported that 19% of Americans tried video-calls, but now the figures are much more impressive, and not only in the USA.  But as you know, the modern society imposes more and more restrictions each day on such free services as Skype. Maybe due to the fact that it’s free or pursuing some other aims… So, let’s stop  making suggestions and go into details:

Current Global Skype Restrictions

We all know that it is dead easy to unblock Twitter with a VPN app installed. But what about Skype?

Skype restrictions are incomprehensible for most people in the world. It is completely strange for those who live in North America, Europe, and Africa. However, in such regions like the Middle East and Asia that makes sense.

However, Skype restrictions are not simply a worry for citizens of countries where Skype is blocked, but also for travelers who have reasons to visit those countries. Therefore, you should prove that Skype is accessible in the country you intend to visit before you go there, so you won’t be shocked.

In such a way, Skype restrictions on the globe usually fall under two main categories: ISP limitations or government censorship.

  • Telecom Limitations

Admittedly, telecom makes a substantial amount of money from calls (especially International calls) and SMS. Skype upsets the industry with its free voice and video calls for Skype users, low-cost calls directly to landlines and mobiles, and instant messaging (that erodes the need for communicating via SMS). Why does this matter for Telecom?

This disruption leads to massive revenue losses for telecom. To preserve their revenue, telecoms may unilaterally enact blocks on Skype. In other instances, some influential telecoms may assure the government to enforce a widespread national Skype blocking. Often, these telecoms offer their own VoIP services that they could profit them as alternatives to fill the void.

  • Government Censorship

Governments around the world yearn for more control over the communication infrastructure in their sovereignty. Aside control, governments may conjure other reasons to deprive their citizens of access to Skype.

  • Other Non-Direct Limitations

In some other countries, Skype may not necessarily be blocked. However, accessing it would cost an arm and a leg. For example, in Panama, those who want to use Skype must pay “Skype Tax” to access the service. In China without a VPN account users may only use a modified version of Skype that is heavily monitored by the Chinese authorities.

How to Bypass Skype Limitations Using A VPN for Skype

A VPN is easy to use, as you do not have to mess around with the setting. In addition, it offers better encryption and you can use it to encrypt other Internet connections and all the data transferring through the Internet. Why is important?

This is especially important if other Internet services and websites are censored in your location. For example, in China, the users who connect to Skype are redirected to a modified and heavily monitored form of Skype called TOM-Skype. Using a secure VPN, Chinese users can download the standard Skype version and maintain unrestricted Skype access. A VPN is the best one to access Skype. Is Skype VPN free to use?

Actually, there are both free of charge VPNs and paid services. Though one can find quite good free VPN packages (10 best free VPNs are listed in this rating), to unblock Skype in China, for example, you’d better prefer paid VPNs to free ones. Just have a look at what you can get with a paid Skype VPN:

  • Wide choice of VPN servers with unrestricted server switching;
  • No limits for data bandwidth;
  • Hard-to-crack encryption;
  • Advanced VPN protocols;
  • Fast speeds, which is really vital for Skype conversations;
  • Lots of additional goodies…

Can I use a free VPN for Skype?

You might think: ‘’If Skype is free software, VPN services to unblock Skype might be also free…’’ why not to make use of free VPN?

Though certain free VPN services might offer not bad features, not all of them are quite appropriate for using them for Skype. Certainly, we have the news that might make you happy in case paying nothing means a lot of for you. You may you use those free VPN services that we recommend in our article about 10 best free VPNs.

They are decent enough to keep you your privacy. Still, they are partially free as most of them are provided as free testing trials for premium packages. We should warn you that free versions are limited in the functions (bandwidth is limited, for example).

Nevertheless, we should warn you about possible threats of free VPNs:

  • Free VPNs may put your privacy at risk! Why?

Because free VPN providers are considered to pass users’ information to third agencies.

  • Free VPNs are not able to provide high standards of traffic protection. Why?

Because they apply weak protocols and sometimes there is no information about the protocols used by some free apps.

  • Free VPNs leak IP addresses! Why?

Because of poor encryption, your authentic IP address may be revealed to the network.

What’s the conclusion?

Choosing an appropriate service is not so easy. You should think twice before making a decision. Also, as you see, there are quite many details for you to think about while selecting a VPN. But, still, the rating will help you to find the best super-fast VPN for Skype.

The best VPN 2019 for Skype will provide you with bypassing all the restrictions, by hiding your IP address and changing your virtual location, also it will encrypt all the transferring data, which is a highly secure measure for any informed Internet user. That’s what we say using a Skype’s VPN is the right step on the way to one’s privacy.

Hi Perry and thank you for the warm comment. We appreciate it. Yes, Skype calls are really monetized in certain states. After some research, I have found out that in Pakistan it is paid and in Panama they even have Skype tax.

Dayan, your Skype is not connecting as it is blocked in this country, see the list of the countries above. In order to unblock it in Thailand or any other country listed in our article, you need a Skype VPN. It would be better if you obtain a VPN subscription before your visit to such countries. VPN’s sites might be blocked as well there. So obtaining a Skype VPN would be the finest decision. Then you are to download and install it on the device. Turn the VPN on and change you IP address every time you want to use Skype, it is expected to be unblocked.

Before I go to China, I wonder what VPN still can bypass the firewall of China. What works with skype there?

April 10, 2018 0

I use PIA, but it has never been recommended on reddit. I used it for several years running, and everything was great. You, guys, included it in the rating. Agree that it deserves this position among the best.

April 20, 2018 1

I used PIA VPN, but I was not satisfied with its performance in China. It worked fine in the USA, but any attempt to connect to it in China was failed. Still, sometimes I managed to check my e-mail, but it was a rare situation. Its speeds aren’t fast, not proper for Skype.

Hi! Wonderful article with plenty of useful information. I used NordVPN and Pure for Skype and other activities. NordVPN is easy to install and use, price is reasonable, even free trial is available (as far as I remember for three days). Even my distant location was not an obstacle to download torrents fast and anonymously. German servers are the fastest for me, but the others are also ok. All in all, 5 out of 5 for me. I agree that NordVPN is worth being the first. My respect to the guys! PureVPN left ambiguous thoughts about it. When I started to use the VPN, I was quite satisfied with the VPN: encryption, total privacy was promised. I believed it was very suitable for kickass. My opinion was changed after I read the news in which it was told that the VPN provider of PureVPN helped the police and revealed user’s logs. They claimed that they don’t keep them, what was in reality? They DO keep! I stopped my subscription and use of this VPN. I was so disappointed in this provider and VPN services on the whole…. How can we trust our privacy to them? What do we pay for? For a real quality service or fake one? I strongly disagree that PureVPN should be placed in this particular rating! Privacy is so important for torrenting, but the provider doesn’t tell the truth to their customers. If didn’t care about my privacy, I would download a free VPN and didn’t pay anything for it. I won’t try it again.

Hi, awesome article you posted here on your site, Saura. Special thanks for the list with the countries where Skype is blocked. I found out that Skype is blocked in UAE. But I am going to travel there and want to communicate via Skype with my family from there. VPN is the only variant to unblock it. I wonder if it is legal to use VPN in UAE. They say vpn using is banned there. Who can recommend any VPN that applies VPN stealth option. Many thanks.

As for me, I use Windscribe for skype in UAE. DNS requests are not leaked to the network, ip addresses as well. Nice service! Really helpful! Recently I have found somewhere on the network, don’t remember exactly where: quora forum or another site, it was sais that VPN for legal issues are not forbidden there. But I don’t know how they identify it.

March 16, 2018 0

I’m not going to engage you in empty talk. No one will be sent to jail because of using a VPN to bypass restrictions. Though I know that it’s ILLEGAL to do it with VPN. If a person is a target and he or she will be under their spying eyes and no one will know it. One should be prepared for everything in such non-democratic countries as UAE when it is related to the rights of privacy.

I am going to china for business and need Skype for communication from there. In your article I read that Skype in China is blocked. Which of the VPNs will you recommend for skype in China? As far as Dubai is concerned, it works there. Still, it is blocked for 4G networks. There are some difficulties in places with low connections as well.

I don’t remember exactly, but in Pakistan Skype calls are paid. Is it true?
