end-to-end encryption

The Snooper's Charter deals with the problem of encryption. End-to-end encryption is not suitable for parliament, that’s why the grapple is still continuing.

In spite of the fact that British people meet with difficult period of Brexit, the Investigatory Powers Bill is being discussed. During the first stage of discussion it has been defined the necessity of banning end-to-end encryption. At the same time the minister of state for defense and deputy leader in the House of Lords Earl Howe has put forth an idea that encryption should be removed completely.

According to her speech, end-to-end encryption provokes the rise of criminality and terrorism, as the communication of criminals is coded. But for some reason she forgets that unencrypted devices can also be used by the same criminals.

Accepting this type of encryption allows people break the law and do it legally without the fear of being punished. It is not right towards the nation. In addition, in some cases law enforcement should have the ability to remove encryption if it is necessary.

The managing director UK and Ireland at enterprise data security specialists Code42 Nic Scott can’t share the opinion, as he considers there’s no such thing as half measures when encryption is discussed. Everything in life implies both variants: benefits it brings and potential threat.

Liberal Democrat life member Lord Strasburger supports the idea that encryption can’t be divided into secure and insecure. Besides, it is impossible that secure encryption for one group of users is insecure for another at the same time.

As for the security services, they called top-of-the-range messengers like Apple’s iMessage and WhatsApp to continue using end-to-end encryption implying the messages can’t be accessible at all even if the government requested it. End-to- end encryption can’t be broken by provider as it is private between users who communicate. Earl Howe might imply that it is necessary to use encryption which can be broken. But in this case the new version of popular IPhone will be produced illegally.

Cancellation of encryption may pose risks to the security of users and lead to some negative consequences. As it means that providers do not fulfil conditions and satisfy customers’ needs.

As for foreign companies it is not legal to make them follow such instructions. This is the case of WhatsApp, Facebook and Google Messenger.

Howe insists on finding the alternative variant to end-to-end encryption. As there are a lot of companies which do not use this encryption and at the same time provide the strong security and privacy. So it is possible to share its experience.
