Proxy Vs VPN - A Significant Battle for Privacy and Security

Last updated: April 21, 2016

If you are in a foreign country, you might have trouble accessing your Facebook page as it is not available in a few countries including China. This holds true for many websites including YouTube, Google etc. This might be a really frustrating thing to deal with. This happens because some countries block the service of a few of these websites.

How can you deal with this problem? Well, all you need is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy server. But you need to know that these two are not the same. There are many differences to talk about.

vpn vs proxy

When it comes to the working of VPN, VPN encrypts or scrambles the data so that hackers will not be able to do anything to it. Or in other words, VPN provides a safe tunnel for the data passed, which protects the data from illegal access. This tunnel cannot be penetrated. Nobody will be able to access your transmission via VPN.

As far as protected data goes, we can talk about a number of things, including instant messages, login information, email communication, downloads, list of websites you visit etc.

You will be able to access a private network via a public network when you use a VPN service.

As for dealing with geo-restrictions, VPN will allow you to change your IP address so that it will look like you are accessing it from the same country. This way, you will be able to access Facebook, even if it is blocked in the said country. People in China access Facebook via VPN.

Proxy Server

Things are little different when it comes to the proxy server. First and foremost, this allows the user to use internet anonymously. You will be able to browse the internet without giving away your IP and location. When you try to visit a website via proxy server, the server of the said website will receive a request from an anonymous server. As a result, you will be able to bypass geo-restrictions here as well. Even if you are accessing it from another country where it is blocked, the proxy server will allow you to gain access to the website in question.

However, you need to remember the fact that your data transactions are not protected, unlike VPN as there is no safe tunnel involved here. Also, your sensitive data will not be encrypted.

As a result, proxy server won’t protect you from the hackers who are trying to access your sensitive data. So, you have got to be careful with the way you use the internet via a proxy server. You need to know that your data can be accessed by dangerous hackers out there. The only good thing about Proxy is that it will allow you to use the internet anonymously.

Now when it comes to a VPN service, you don’t have to worry about any of these. Nobody will be able to snoop into your privacy when you are using a VPN service. You will be able to protect sensitive information like credit card information when you are using a VPN.

But you don’t need to have both. Since VPN allows you to do both, all that you need is a good VPN service. Yes, you will have to pay for the VPN service unlike Proxy server. But it is totally worth it.
