If you are not an ‘interdependent’ user yet or you are out of the picture, you are on the right track. Today, we are to present you an interview being conducted with Avi, a VPN product manager at Hola, who deals with the first P2P VPN. So, how the VPN reached almost 100m installs during a comparatively short period and what makes it’s almost impossible to block the use of Hola VPN and many other curious facts are to be presented in the interview.
— Please, introduce yourself and tell us a few words about your company and the service.
— My name is Avi - VPN product manager at Hola. Our goal at Hola VPN is to give everybody freedom to browse the web safely, faster, and without censorship. Our VPN is the first community powered (Peer-to-Peer) VPN, where users help each other to make the web accessible for all, by sharing their idle resources. Our VPN is available on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Hola was founded in Israel, and today employs people in many countries.
— Does the phrase “Internet freedom” exist? Has it changed recently?
— The Internet started out as being completely open and democratic. All users had the same access to all of the worldwide web. As the Internet became a larger part of our lives, governments, content owners, ISPs and others began limiting our access to some parts of the web for their own purposes. Thus the WWW stopped being truly worldwide.
Today Facebook is blocked in Iran, Twitter is blocked in Turkey, and so on.
VPNs are making the WWW Worldwide again. They allow anyone in any country to access any site.
The issue is that VPNs have a cost of service, since they need to employ thousands of servers to provide service to their users. This makes VPN prohibitive to most people that actually need the service. Hola changes that by being a P2P VPN, where the users are helping each other, thus there is no cost of service, and thus Hola can offer this free to its users, and make the web truly open to those that need it the most.
— What are the most significant achievements of your VPN Service?
— The largest achievement was our organic growth - fueled only by word of mouth. People have been recommending Hola to their friends, and through that alone we've reached almost 100m installs during this period!
— What is unique about your VPN Service?
— Hola is the first community powered (Peer-to-Peer) VPN for HTTP, where users help each other to make the web accessible for all, by sharing their idle resources. Users that share their idle resources, can fully enjoy the benefits of the HOLA VPN for free. User may choose not to share their idle resources, and still enjoy the full benefits of the HOLA VPN for the nominal fee of 5$ per month (45$ per year). According to our statistics, the vast majority of our users prefer to share their idle resources, and enjoy the benefits of the HOLA VPN for free.
— Why should customers choose your VPN Service instead of your competitors?
— There are over 100 VPN vendors, and all of them must deploy more servers as they have more users, thus requiring them to either charge a monthly fee, or employ heavy, annoying advertising. Hola's P2P technology makes it completely free and ad free. This is probably what made Hola the most popular VPN in a relatively short time.
— Which innovations/new technologies are expected to be in VPN sphere?
— VPNs are becoming more and more popular every day, and I’m sure it will be even more popular in the future. I expect that countries and companies will try to block VPN services, which will require the VPN companies to find a solution for this issue. Hola VPN’s unique technology is based on a P2P network, which means it is not dependent on centralized servers, and users share information with each other - so it’s almost impossible to block the use of Hola VPN - and that’s what places the Hola VPN at the cutting edge of the VPN technology.
— Do you personally use VPN account?
— Of course!
— Could you wish anything for the users?
— Hola's goal is to make the internet faster, more open, and cheaper to operate. So give us a try, and join over 95 million people who have already enjoyed surfing the web privately, securely, and freely.
Being a pioneer in the P2P technology applied for a VPN, Hola is a living illustration of customers’ cooperation united with the same spirit. In agreement with the service provider, countries and governments are expected to block VPNs through its servers, but Hola is safe from that danger as it’s impossible to make as Hola doesn’t possess or holds any servers while relying on P2P technology. Maybe exactly due to the reason, the service has so many followers.
We wish you every success and many true as steel clients!
