Bashware:a new essential threat for Windows 10 holders

Last updated: September 16, 2017

According to the data presented by ‘Market Share Research’ at the beginning of 2017, the number of Windows 10 users reaches 25%.

On the one hand, the figures are impressive as almost the quarter uses this OS, but on the other hand, it is not enough for a new advanced operating system.

So what is the reason of such effect?

The thing is in vulnerability of Windows 10 OS to hacking attacks. Let us start from the very beginning. Windows 10 creators made their best to improve the system and make it user-friendly and easy. Thus, Windows Subsystem for Linux feature was added to the OS.

This feature allows running Linux on Windows 10 OS without any extra modifications. The advantages of this feature are so significant that creators didn’t take into consideration the weak points of it. Thus, Windows 10 became attackable by malware.

Bashware is the most formidable threat for Windows 10 as it is not identified by ordinary security tools such as antivirus systems and other security products. In such a way, if one uses a Windows 10 on a device, built-in WSL feature makes it possible to attack the device from the direction of Bashware. Thus, it is strongly recommended to take into account that appropriate measures should be undertaken to be protected. It was already mentioned that Bashware bypasses the security tools on devices and the only way to stop it is to use a VPN.

VPN is the only security tool that blocks any kind of malware and makes gadgets protected against adversaries. Thus, it is necessary to show preference to the Virtual Private Networks with the following characteristics:

- a big number of servers and IPs;

- free log policy;

- price (a good VPN can’t be free);

- reliable methods of cyphering.

If a user pays attention to these characteristics while choosing a VPN for his or her protection, a desired level of security will be achieved.
